Suvendu Adhikari has been elected as the BJP Legislature Party leader in West Bengal. He will be the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
The decision was made at a meeting of BJP MLAs in Kolkata, following the party’s defeat in the recent Assembly elections. Adhikari secured the position unanimously.
Previously, the BJP had considered several names, including those of Rahul Sinha and Dilip Ghosh, for the role. However, Adhikari emerged as the consensus choice, reflecting his influence within the party and his performance in the elections.
Adhikari won the Nandigram seat, defeating Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by a narrow margin. This victory was significant for the BJP and established Adhikari as a prominent figure in the state’s politics.
Dilip Ghosh, the former state BJP president, congratulated Adhikari on his election and pledged his support. He stated the party would work together under Adhikari’s leadership to strengthen its position in West Bengal.
The election of Adhikari as Leader of the Opposition signals the BJP’s attempt to consolidate its strength and prepare for future electoral battles in the state. The party aims to challenge the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and expand its base in West Bengal.
The BJP secured 77 seats in the 294-member Assembly, while the TMC won 213 seats. The Left Front and Congress alliance secured a combined total of 48 seats.
Adhikari’s appointment is viewed as a strategic move by the BJP to capitalize on his popularity and organizational skills. He previously held key positions in the TMC before joining the BJP in December 2020. His understanding of the state’s political landscape is expected to be valuable for the party.
