External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted cricket’s significant role in strengthening India-Trinidad and Tobago relations during his recent official visit. He emphasized that the sport provides a unique and special dimension to the bilateral ties, going beyond traditional diplomatic and economic engagements.
Jaishankar noted the large Indo-Trinidadian population and their deep connection to Indian culture, with cricket serving as a powerful unifying factor. He observed that shared passion for the game fosters people-to-people connections and creates a strong sense of camaraderie between the two nations.
Discussions with Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Keith Rowley centered on enhancing cooperation in areas like energy, digital technology, and healthcare. Both sides expressed commitment to expanding economic partnerships and exploring new avenues for collaboration. Jaishankar also acknowledged Trinidad and Tobago’s support for India’s priorities on the global stage, including counter-terrorism and maritime security.
The visit also involved a meeting with the opposition leader, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, reflecting India’s desire to engage with all political stakeholders in Trinidad and Tobago. Jaishankar underscored the importance of maintaining a broad-based and inclusive approach to strengthening bilateral relations.
He inaugurated the renovated Indian High Commission building and unveiled a bust of Mahatma Gandhi at the University of the West Indies, symbolizing India’s commitment to promoting its cultural heritage and values abroad. The visit aimed to reinforce India’s engagement with the Caribbean region, recognizing its growing strategic importance.
Jaishankar’s remarks on cricket underscored its cultural significance and its ability to transcend political boundaries, contributing to a deeper and more meaningful relationship between India and Trinidad and Tobago.
