Dakshina Kannada district administration has proactively implemented precautionary measures in anticipation of the upcoming monsoon season, focusing on areas identified as disaster-prone. Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan MP stated that a comprehensive assessment has pinpointed 167 villages across 11 taluks as susceptible to landslides, flooding, and sea erosion.
Key actions include identifying and marking vulnerable locations, establishing evacuation plans, and preparing relief centers equipped with essential supplies like food, water, and medical provisions. 28 shelters have been identified and are ready for use. Emphasis is placed on early warning systems, with the installation of rain gauges and water level indicators in critical areas. The administration is coordinating with the Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) for additional resources and support.
Specific measures address different risks. For landslide-prone areas, soil testing is underway to assess stability, and residents are being advised on safety protocols. Coastal regions facing sea erosion are receiving attention with the deployment of protective measures like retaining walls and sandbagging. Riverine areas are being monitored for potential flooding, and desilting operations are being carried out to improve water flow.
The administration is actively engaging with local communities through awareness campaigns, educating them about disaster preparedness and evacuation procedures. Taluk-level task forces have been formed to oversee implementation of these measures and coordinate rescue operations if needed. A 24/7 control room has been established to monitor the situation and respond to emergencies.
Furthermore, the district is prepared to handle potential disruptions to power and communication networks. The forest department is involved in identifying and mitigating risks related to falling trees. The administration urges citizens to report any signs of danger and cooperate with authorities during the monsoon season. The focus remains on minimizing loss of life and property through proactive planning and swift response.
