IIT Madras and the US-based Global Research Foundation (GRF) are establishing a deep-tech hub in California’s Silicon Valley. The hub, named IIT Madras-GRF Center for Innovation, aims to facilitate collaboration between researchers, startups, and industry partners in areas like artificial intelligence, robotics, biotechnology, and advanced manufacturing.
The center will focus on translating research into marketable products and fostering entrepreneurship. It will provide resources and mentorship to Indian startups looking to expand into the US market, and to US companies interested in Indian talent and technology. A key objective is to bridge the gap between academic research and real-world applications, accelerating the commercialization of deep-tech innovations.
GRF will provide infrastructure, including office space and laboratory facilities, while IIT Madras will contribute its research expertise and network. The initial focus will be on supporting 20-30 startups, with plans to scale up operations in the future. The center will also host workshops, seminars, and networking events to promote collaboration and knowledge sharing.
The initiative is supported by the Indian government’s Startup India program and aims to contribute to the growth of India’s deep-tech ecosystem. It is expected to attract investment and create job opportunities in both India and the US. The hub will operate as a not-for-profit organization, reinvesting any surplus revenue into supporting further research and innovation.
Professor V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, highlighted the center’s potential to strengthen the Indo-US technology partnership. GRF’s founder, Dr. Lakshmi Padmanabhan, emphasized the importance of fostering a vibrant ecosystem for deep-tech startups. The center’s location in Silicon Valley provides access to a large pool of investors, mentors, and potential customers, increasing the likelihood of success for participating startups. The launch is planned for early 2024.
