Panel lawyers appointed for bonded labour cases in Thanjavur

## Summary of The Hindu Article: Panel Lawyers Appointed for Bonded Labour Cases in Thanjavur

The Tamil Nadu government has appointed a panel of lawyers to represent bonded labour victims in Thanjavur district, following a surge in reported cases, particularly involving brick kiln workers. This initiative addresses concerns raised after several instances of workers being illegally detained and exploited.

The panel comprises eight lawyers, four men and four women, selected from the Thanjavur Bar Association. They will provide legal assistance to identified bonded labour victims, ensuring representation in courts and tribunals. The Labour Department will bear the cost of their fees.

Recent investigations revealed widespread bonded labour practices in brick kilns across Thanjavur, Perambalur, and Ariyalur districts. Workers, primarily from northern states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, were allegedly lured with advances and then forced to work under exploitative conditions, often facing restrictions on movement and subjected to debt bondage.

The appointment of dedicated lawyers is a direct response to difficulties faced by victims in accessing legal recourse. Many are unaware of their rights, lack financial resources, and face language barriers. The panel aims to bridge this gap and ensure fair legal representation.

District officials report that over 300 workers have been identified as potential bonded labour victims and have been rescued in recent months. The rescued workers are being provided with rehabilitation assistance, including transportation back to their home states and financial aid.

The move is also seen as a proactive step to strengthen enforcement of the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, 1976. Authorities are focusing on identifying and prosecuting those involved in perpetuating bonded labour practices. The government emphasizes its commitment to eradicating this form of exploitation and protecting the rights of vulnerable workers. The panel lawyers will work closely with the Labour Department and other relevant agencies to achieve this goal.
