The Andhra Pradesh Government Doctors’ Association (APGDA) has requested the state Health Minister to appoint a Director of Medical Education (DME) from among six eligible candidates. The current DME post is vacant, leading to administrative issues within the medical education department.
The APGDA highlighted that a selection committee previously identified six senior professors – Dr. P.V. Rama Rao, Dr. V. Ramakrishna, Dr. K. Lakshmi, Dr. P. Lakshmi Narasimha Rao, Dr. M. Venkateswara Rao, and Dr. G.V. Ramana Murthy – as suitable for the position. These candidates possess the necessary experience and seniority.
The association expressed concern over delays in the appointment, stating it is impacting crucial decisions related to medical college admissions, infrastructure development, and faculty recruitment. They argue that appointing a DME from the existing eligible pool would ensure continuity and efficient administration.
APGDA specifically noted the importance of a full-time DME during the National Medical Commission (NMC) inspections of medical colleges, as well as for managing the NEET counseling process and addressing issues related to bond service. They believe a permanent DME is vital for smooth functioning of the department and maintaining the quality of medical education in Andhra Pradesh.
The association further stated that delaying the appointment creates uncertainty and demoralizes the medical community. They urged the Health Minister to prioritize the DME appointment to avoid further disruption and ensure effective governance of medical education in the state. They emphasized the need for a transparent and timely selection process based on merit and seniority.
