Telangana accounts for 20% of all human trafficking cases registered in India in 2023, making it the third-highest state after West Bengal and Rajasthan. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data reveals a significant increase in trafficking cases nationwide, with 63,335 cases reported, a 25% rise from 2022. Telangana recorded 12,604 cases, a substantial jump from 8,148 in the previous year.
A majority of these cases in Telangana involve trafficking for forced labour, followed by trafficking for sexual exploitation. The increase is attributed to improved reporting and heightened awareness among law enforcement and NGOs. However, officials acknowledge that the actual number of cases could be significantly higher due to underreporting.
The NCRB data highlights a concerning trend of trafficking within the state, with a large number of victims being trafficked from one district to another within Telangana itself. Key source districts include Mahabubnagar, Rangareddy, and Medchal-Malkajgiri, while destination districts include Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, and Vikarabad.
Most victims are women and children, with a significant number being from marginalized communities. The report indicates a rise in online trafficking, with perpetrators using social media and online platforms to lure and exploit victims.
Authorities are focusing on strengthening inter-state coordination, enhancing victim rehabilitation programs, and raising public awareness to combat human trafficking effectively. Anti-Human Trafficking Units (AHTUs) are being strengthened, and training programs are being conducted for law enforcement personnel. The state government is also working with NGOs to provide support and shelter to rescued victims, focusing on their long-term rehabilitation and reintegration into society. The data underscores the urgent need for continued efforts to address the root causes of trafficking, including poverty, lack of education, and social inequality.
