Tamil Nadu seeks postponement of DGP empanelment committee meeting

Tamil Nadu government has requested the Union government to postpone the meeting of the Empowered Committee scheduled to review the empanelment of Director General of Police (DGP) candidates. The state cites the ongoing investigation by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) into allegations against several senior IPS officers as the reason for the postponement.

The state government argues that finalizing the empanelment process before the DVAC investigation concludes would be premature and potentially compromise the integrity of the selection process. Several IPS officers are under investigation for disproportionate assets and other corruption charges.

Tamil Nadu believes a fair assessment of the officers’ suitability for the DGP post can only be made after the DVAC submits its findings. The state has communicated this concern to the Union government, emphasizing the need to uphold transparency and maintain the highest standards in the appointment of the DGP.

The Empowered Committee, comprising the Union Home Secretary, the Secretary (Personnel), and the State Chief Secretary, is responsible for reviewing the performance records and integrity of IPS officers considered for empanelment as DGP. The committee’s recommendation is crucial for the appointment process.

Currently, several senior IPS officers are in contention for the DGP post, including those facing DVAC inquiries. The state government’s request aims to ensure that these investigations are completed and their outcomes considered before any decision is made regarding their empanelment.

The postponement request reflects the Tamil Nadu government’s commitment to ensuring a fair and unbiased selection process for the DGP, free from any potential influence of ongoing investigations. The state awaits the Union government’s response to its request. The current DGP’s term is ending soon, making the appointment process time-sensitive.
