Stage erected for polls removed after days in M.G.R Nagar

A makeshift stage erected in MGR Nagar, Chennai, for potential election campaigning was dismantled after several days, following intervention from the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission (TNSEC). Local residents had complained to the TNSEC about the unauthorized structure, raising concerns it violated the Model Code of Conduct despite no formal election dates being announced for local body polls.

The stage, constructed on a public space near the MGR Nagar bus depot, had sparked speculation about early campaigning, particularly linked to potential candidates from the ruling DMK. DMK sources initially claimed the structure was built for a party event unrelated to elections, specifically a function to distribute welfare assistance. However, the TNSEC viewed the stage as a potential violation of election rules, even in the absence of a declared poll schedule.

Following the complaints and the TNSEC’s inquiry, Chennai Corporation officials were directed to remove the structure. Corporation workers carried out the dismantling process, removing the stage materials. The TNSEC emphasized that while no election dates are currently announced, the Model Code of Conduct is observed proactively to ensure a fair and level playing field once the election is declared.

The incident highlights the TNSEC’s vigilance in preventing premature campaigning and maintaining election preparedness. Officials stated that similar unauthorized structures will be removed promptly to prevent any unfair advantage to potential candidates. The removal of the stage aims to reassure the public and political parties that the election process will be conducted fairly and transparently. The Corporation has been instructed to prevent the re-erection of such structures without proper authorization.
