Residents apprehend vehicle dumping of sludge in open plots in Ranipet

Residents of Walajapet and surrounding areas in Ranipet district, Tamil Nadu, are expressing serious concerns over the alleged illegal dumping of industrial sludge in open plots and agricultural lands. The issue came to light after residents noticed several vehicles transporting unidentified sludge and discharging it during nighttime in areas like Melmonavoor, Thandarampet, and Vaduganthangal.

The sludge is suspected to originate from industrial units in the SIPCOT Industrial Complex in Ranipet. Locals fear the dumped material contains hazardous substances that could contaminate groundwater, soil, and pose significant health risks. They report a foul odour emanating from the dumping sites and are worried about the long-term environmental consequences.

Residents have filed complaints with the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) and local authorities, including the District Collector and police, requesting immediate investigation and action. They allege that previous complaints have not yielded satisfactory results, and the dumping continues unabated.

The TNPCB officials have stated they received complaints and dispatched a team to collect samples from the suspected dumping sites for analysis. Preliminary investigations suggest the material is indeed industrial sludge, but the exact composition and potential hazards are still under assessment.

Local farmers are particularly anxious as the sludge dumping threatens their agricultural livelihoods. Contamination of soil and water resources could render their land unproductive. Residents are demanding stringent action against those responsible for the illegal dumping, including the industrial units involved and the transporters. They are also calling for a comprehensive investigation into the monitoring mechanisms of the SIPCOT Industrial Complex to prevent such incidents in the future. The situation has created a sense of fear and uncertainty among the residents, who are demanding a safe and healthy environment.
