Canada urged to act against ‘anti-India extremist elements’: MEA

India has strongly urged Canada to take action against anti-India extremist elements operating within its borders, following the recent display of a float glorifying the assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in a parade in Brampton, Ontario.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) summoned Canadian High Commissioner Cameron MacKay to lodge a strong protest, conveying India’s deep concerns over the matter. The float depicted a tableau recreating the events of 1984, featuring images of Indira Gandhi and Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, along with depictions of violence. India views this as a blatant attempt to glorify terrorism and a serious affront to India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The MEA emphasized that such displays are not simply expressions of free speech but actively promote violence and hatred, and undermine the friendly relations between India and Canada. It highlighted the presence of pro-Khalistan extremists who have been allowed to operate freely in Canada, posing a threat to peace and security.

India specifically requested the Canadian government to ensure the safety and security of Indian diplomats and the Indian diaspora in Canada, citing a climate of intimidation and threats. Concerns were raised about the lack of concrete action taken by Canadian authorities despite repeated assurances to address these issues.

The incident has further strained the already tense relationship between India and Canada, which deteriorated after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau publicly accused Indian agents of involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent Khalistan separatist leader, in Surrey, British Columbia. Canada has not provided conclusive evidence to support these allegations.

India reiterated its expectation that Canada will uphold its commitments to combat terrorism and extremism, and take prompt and decisive action against those who promote violence and hatred. The MEA stated that allowing such elements to operate freely is detrimental to both countries and runs counter to the principles of international law and diplomacy.
