Vietnamese President Vo Van Thuong visited Bodh Gaya, Bihar, on December 17, 2023, as part of a four-day state visit to India. He was accompanied by a high-level delegation.
The visit focused on strengthening cultural and historical ties between India and Vietnam, particularly relating to Buddhism. Bodh Gaya is the place where Gautam Buddha attained enlightenment, and holds immense significance for Buddhists globally, including the large Buddhist community in Vietnam.
President Thuong visited the Mahabodhi Temple, the central shrine of the Buddhist faith, and offered prayers. He also explored other important Buddhist sites within the complex. He was received by Bihar Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar and other dignitaries.
The Vietnamese President expressed his deep appreciation for India’s support and assistance in preserving and promoting Buddhism. He highlighted the historical connection between the two nations through Buddhism, noting that Indian monks played a crucial role in introducing Buddhism to Vietnam centuries ago.
During the visit, discussions centered on enhancing cooperation in areas like tourism, culture, and people-to-people exchanges. Both sides expressed a desire to increase the number of Vietnamese tourists visiting Bodh Gaya and other Buddhist pilgrimage sites in India.
The visit is seen as a significant step in further solidifying the comprehensive strategic partnership between India and Vietnam. It underscores the shared cultural heritage and the importance of Buddhist connections in fostering closer ties. The Vietnamese President’s trip also included engagements in New Delhi, focusing on bilateral discussions with Indian leaders on various aspects of the India-Vietnam relationship. The visit coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
