The Belagavi Zilla Panchayat (ZP) in Karnataka is initiating steps to integrate yoga and AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy) practices into all schools within the district. This initiative aims to improve student health and well-being, and promote traditional Indian systems of medicine.
The ZP plans to establish dedicated yoga and AYUSH corners in each school, equipped with necessary materials like yoga mats, books, and charts detailing AYUSH principles. These corners will serve as spaces for students to learn and practice yoga and basic AYUSH therapies.
A key component of the plan involves training teachers. The ZP will organize training programs for physical education teachers and other interested school staff, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to effectively conduct yoga sessions and introduce AYUSH concepts. These trainings will cover asanas, pranayama, meditation techniques, and basic understanding of Ayurvedic principles relevant to daily life.
The initiative will be implemented in phases, starting with government schools and potentially extending to private schools later. The ZP is allocating funds from its own resources and exploring possibilities of utilizing grants from the State government and other agencies to support the program.
The ZP believes that incorporating yoga and AYUSH practices will help students manage stress, improve concentration, boost immunity, and adopt a healthier lifestyle. It also aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes the integration of traditional Indian knowledge systems into the education curriculum.
Officials highlight the growing recognition of yoga and AYUSH globally and their potential to address modern health challenges. The program seeks to create awareness about these systems among students from a young age, fostering a holistic approach to health and wellness. The ZP intends to monitor the program’s progress and impact through regular assessments and feedback from schools and students.
