The Assam Rifles successfully rescued a woman from Manipur who had been abducted by a Myanmar-based extremist group. The woman, identified as Lunminthang Haokip, was kidnapped from New Canaan village in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on July 18th, 2024. The perpetrators were linked to the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), both banned insurgent groups operating from across the India-Myanmar border.
Following the abduction, a coordinated operation was launched by the Assam Rifles, involving extensive intelligence gathering and cross-border coordination. The operation culminated in a successful rescue mission conducted in Myanmar on July 27th. Details of the operation’s specifics within Myanmar were not disclosed for security reasons.
The rescued woman has been handed over to the Manipur Police. Medical examinations confirmed her well-being, though she was reportedly traumatized by the ordeal. Authorities are providing her with necessary support and counseling.
This rescue highlights the ongoing security challenges posed by insurgent groups operating along the India-Myanmar border. The Assam Rifles have been actively involved in counter-insurgency operations in the region, working to maintain peace and stability and protect civilians from cross-border threats. The operation demonstrates the force’s commitment to addressing the issue of abduction and ensuring the safety of citizens in the border areas.
The incident underscores the complex security landscape in Manipur and the need for continued vigilance and collaboration between security forces and local authorities to combat insurgent activities and prevent future abductions. The Assam Rifles continue to pursue leads to apprehend the remaining members of the group involved in the kidnapping.
