This represents 54% of the total MLAs elected in the 2024 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

The Tamil Nadu Vaikunda Janayaga Koottani (TVK) party leads with the highest number of MLAs facing criminal charges – 41 out of its 43 elected representatives. This equates to 95% of its winning candidates.

Following TVK, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has the largest number of MLAs with criminal cases, totaling 39 (22% of its 172 elected MLAs). The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has 26 MLAs (38% of its 66 elected MLAs) with pending criminal cases. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has 6 MLAs (43% of its 14 elected MLAs) facing criminal charges.

Regarding the nature of the cases, 88 MLAs face cases related to serious criminal offenses, including those registered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections related to murder, attempt to murder, promoting enmity between groups, and criminal conspiracy.

The ADR-TNEW report also highlights that 153 MLAs (65%) have cases related to non-serious offenses, such as violations of the Representation of the People Act, damage to public property, and offenses against public order.

The analysis is based on the affidavits filed by the candidates during the election and data collected from various sources, including criminal databases and news reports. The organizations emphasize the need for transparency and accountability in the electoral process and advocate for measures to prevent individuals with criminal backgrounds from entering politics.
