Stone by stone, Hanamkonda’s Kakatiya-era dance pavilion rises again

The historic dance pavilion, a relic of the Kakatiya dynasty in Hanamkonda, Telangana, is undergoing extensive restoration work after decades of neglect. Originally built around 10th-11th centuries, the structure served as a platform for royal performances and public gatherings. It fell into disrepair over time, suffering damage from weathering, vegetation growth, and encroachment.

The current restoration, initiated in 2022 by the Department of Archaeology and Museums, Telangana, involves meticulously disassembling the pavilion stone by stone. Each stone is carefully documented, cleaned, and treated before being reassembled using traditional techniques and lime mortar – avoiding cement which can damage the original structure. The project aims to revive the pavilion to its original glory, showcasing the architectural prowess of the Kakatiya era.

Archaeologists discovered intricate carvings and sculptural elements during the dismantling process, revealing details previously obscured by layers of dirt and vegetation. These include depictions of dancers, musicians, and floral motifs, providing insights into the cultural life of the Kakatiya period. The pavilion’s unique design, featuring a raised platform supported by intricately carved pillars, is being carefully preserved.

The restoration isn’t simply reconstruction; it’s a process of conservation. Experts are addressing structural weaknesses and ensuring the pavilion’s long-term stability. The project also includes landscaping to recreate the original ambience surrounding the structure.

The restored pavilion is expected to become a major tourist attraction, highlighting the rich cultural heritage of Telangana. The project is being lauded for its commitment to preserving historical authenticity and employing traditional restoration methods. Completion is anticipated by December 2024, with plans for it to be a focal point for cultural events and a symbol of Hanamkonda’s historical significance. The restoration exemplifies a growing focus on preserving and promoting the state’s Kakatiya heritage.
