Three arrested for organ trade in Kerala

## Organ Trade in Kerala: Summary

A special investigation team (SIT) in Kerala has arrested three individuals – a hospital administrator, a surgeon, and an agent – in connection with an illegal organ trade ring. The arrests stem from a complaint filed by a young man who alleged he was coerced into selling his kidney to a foreign national.

The investigation began after the victim reported being approached by an agent offering a substantial sum for his kidney. He underwent medical tests at a private hospital in Kozhikode, and subsequently, his kidney was transplanted into a recipient from Sri Lanka. The victim claims he received only a fraction of the promised amount and suffered post-operative complications.

The arrested hospital administrator allegedly facilitated the illegal transactions within the hospital, while the surgeon performed the transplant procedure despite knowing the unethical and illegal nature of the operation. The agent is accused of identifying and recruiting donors, and coordinating the entire process.

Police investigations revealed a network operating across multiple states, potentially involving more hospitals and individuals. The SIT is currently examining financial transactions and medical records to identify the full extent of the racket and any potential foreign connections.

Preliminary findings suggest the organ trade involved primarily kidneys, with recipients largely being individuals from neighboring countries seeking transplants. Authorities believe the operation exploited vulnerable individuals facing financial hardship, luring them with promises of quick money.

The Kerala government has taken a serious view of the incident, and the Health Department has initiated a separate inquiry to assess the role of private hospitals in regulating organ transplantation procedures. This case has highlighted concerns regarding the lack of stringent oversight and the potential for exploitation within the organ donation and transplantation system in the state. Further investigations are underway to identify and apprehend all those involved in this illegal trade.
