Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan has been appointed as the next Chief of Naval Staff, succeeding Admiral R. Hari Kumar, whose term ends on December 31, 2024. The appointment, announced by the Ministry of Defence, will take effect from January 1, 2025.
Vice Admiral Swaminathan is currently the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command. He is a qualified Navigation specialist and has a distinguished career spanning over 36 years in the Indian Navy.
He has commanded several ships, including the guided missile destroyer INS Rajput, the frigate INS Satpura, and the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya. His staff appointments include serving as the Joint Director at Naval Operations, Director General of Naval Operations, and Deputy Chief of Naval Staff. He was awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2023 for his exceptional devotion to duty.
The appointment of Vice Admiral Swaminathan marks a significant moment as he will be the first officer from the Indian Navy’s Navigation branch to hold the highest rank. Traditionally, the Chief of Naval Staff has been from the executive branch.
The Ministry of Defence highlighted his extensive experience in various command and staff positions, contributing significantly to the operational readiness of the Indian Navy. His leadership at the Western Naval Command has been particularly noted.
Admiral Hari Kumar, the outgoing Chief of Naval Staff, took office on December 1, 2022. The change in leadership occurs at a time when the Indian Navy is focused on modernization, enhancing its capabilities, and playing a crucial role in ensuring maritime security in the Indian Ocean region. The Navy is currently undertaking several projects to enhance its fleet, including the acquisition of new warships and submarines.
