Rat poison in watermelon killed four of a family in Mumbai: forensic report

## Mumbai Family Deaths: Summary

A family of six in Mumbai died after consuming watermelon on June 16, 2024. Initial suspicions centered around food poisoning, but investigations have now confirmed the presence of zinc phosphide, a highly toxic rat poison, as the cause of death.

Viscera samples from the deceased, along with a sample of the watermelon consumed, tested positive for zinc phosphide at the state-run Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Kalina, Mumbai. The FSL report conclusively established the presence of the poison.

Police investigations revealed the watermelon was purchased from a vendor near Masjid Bunder market. The vendor, identified as Chandan Sharma, has been arrested. Sharma reportedly purchased the watermelons from a wholesale fruit market in Navi Mumbai.

Further investigation traced the source of the zinc phosphide to a chemical shop in Maharashtra. The shop owner and an employee have also been arrested for allegedly selling the chemical without proper documentation or verification of the purchaser’s intent. They reportedly failed to maintain a register of sales as required by law.

Zinc phosphide is used as a rodenticide and is extremely dangerous to humans. Ingestion causes severe gastrointestinal distress, leading to organ failure and ultimately, death. The police are exploring whether the contamination was intentional or accidental.

The investigation is focusing on determining how the zinc phosphide entered the watermelon – whether it was deliberately mixed, or if it occurred during transportation or storage. Authorities are examining the possibility of foul play, but accidental contamination remains a strong line of inquiry.

The police are also investigating the supply chain of the watermelon and the chemical to identify any further negligence or criminal activity. The case has raised concerns about food safety and the regulation of hazardous chemicals.
