Census enumerators ID can be verified through QR code

The Union Home Ministry has introduced a QR code system for verifying the identity of census enumerators across the country, aiming to enhance transparency and public trust during the upcoming decennial census. This initiative addresses concerns regarding potential impersonation and ensures that individuals collecting census data are legitimate officials.

Each enumerator will be issued a unique ID card featuring a QR code. Citizens can scan this code using a dedicated app – either the India Census app or any QR code scanner – on their smartphones to instantly verify the enumerator’s details. The verified information will include the enumerator’s name, photograph, allocated area of operation, and contact information.

The decision stems from recommendations made by the Standing Committee on Home Affairs, which highlighted the need for a robust verification mechanism. Previous census operations relied on physical ID cards, which were susceptible to forgery.

The QR code system will be implemented during the house-listing phase, scheduled to begin in April 2024, and continue throughout the census process. Training for enumerators on the use of the system is underway.

The Ministry emphasizes that participation in the census is legally mandated under the Census Act of 1948, and citizens are obligated to provide accurate information. However, the QR code verification system aims to alleviate anxieties about data security and ensure citizens feel comfortable sharing information with authorized personnel.

The government has also established a helpline number – 1950 – for citizens to report any suspicious activity or seek clarification regarding the census process. This multi-pronged approach, combining technological verification with a dedicated helpline, seeks to build confidence and ensure a smooth and reliable census operation. The system is designed to be user-friendly and accessible to a wide range of citizens, even those with limited smartphone experience.
