A thalassemia awareness walk was organized on Necklace Road, Hyderabad, on May 8, 2024, by the Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Society (TSCS) in collaboration with Apollo Hospitals. The event aimed to raise awareness about thalassemia, a genetic blood disorder, and promote early detection and prevention.
Over 1,500 participants, including patients, families, doctors, and volunteers, joined the walk. Apollo Hospitals doctors highlighted the importance of genetic counseling and prenatal diagnosis for couples at risk of having children with thalassemia. They emphasized that early diagnosis and comprehensive care can significantly improve the quality of life for those affected.
TSCS representatives explained that thalassemia requires lifelong blood transfusions and iron chelation therapy, placing a significant burden on patients and their families. The society provides support services, including blood transfusions, iron chelation, and counseling, to over 3,000 thalassemia patients in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
The walk also served as a platform to advocate for increased access to affordable treatment and better healthcare facilities for thalassemia patients. Speakers stressed the need for a dedicated thalassemia care center in every district of Telangana.
Dr. Madan Gopal, a consultant pediatric hematologist at Apollo Hospitals, discussed the advancements in thalassemia treatment, including hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), which offers a potential cure. However, HSCT is expensive and requires a matched donor, making it inaccessible to many patients.
The event included cultural performances and interactive sessions to educate the public about thalassemia. Organizers encouraged regular blood donation to ensure a sufficient supply of blood for thalassemia patients. The walk concluded with a pledge to support the cause and work towards a thalassemia-free future. The TSCS plans to continue its awareness campaigns and support services to improve the lives of individuals affected by this genetic disorder.
