Tamil Nadu Congress MLAs camping in Hyderabad amid uncertainty in government formation

Tamil Nadu Congress MLAs have been moved to a hotel in Hyderabad, reportedly to prevent potential poaching attempts by the AIADMK. This action follows the recent Lok Sabha election results where the DMK-led alliance, including the Congress, suffered significant losses in Tamil Nadu.

The Congress won only three Lok Sabha seats in the state, a substantial decline from the eight they held previously. This poor performance has fueled speculation about potential shifts in allegiance among MLAs, particularly given the AIADMK’s attempts to regain ground.

Sources indicate the decision to move the MLAs was a precautionary measure taken by the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) leadership, with approval from the high command. Approximately 16 Congress MLAs are currently staying at the hotel.

The AIADMK has publicly stated its intention to explore all possibilities for government formation, including seeking support from other parties. While the DMK still holds a majority in the assembly, the reduced margin and the AIADMK’s overtures have created a fluid political situation.

Congress leaders have accused the AIADMK of attempting to destabilize the government through inducements and pressure tactics. They maintain that the MLAs were moved to ensure their unity and prevent any attempts at horse-trading.

The TNCC president, Selva Perunthagai, confirmed the MLAs’ stay in Hyderabad, emphasizing it was a strategic move to safeguard the party’s legislators. He dismissed claims of any internal dissent within the Congress.

The situation remains dynamic, with ongoing political maneuvering expected in the coming days. The focus is on whether the AIADMK can secure enough support to challenge the DMK-led government or if the current coalition will remain intact despite the recent electoral setback. The MLAs are expected to return to Chennai after a few days, depending on the evolving political landscape.
