CIAL registers 10% growth in cargo movement despite West Asia crisis

Cochin International Airport (CIAL) recorded a 10% growth in cargo movement during the 2023-24 financial year, handling 85,000 metric tonnes despite the challenges posed by the West Asia crisis. This growth is attributed to increased exports of perishables, particularly seafood and vegetables, and a shift in trade routes.

The airport witnessed a significant increase in international cargo traffic, offsetting a slight dip in domestic cargo. Perishable cargo comprised approximately 40% of the total cargo handled, with seafood exports experiencing a substantial rise. CIAL actively promoted its cool chain facilities, attracting more exporters of temperature-sensitive goods.

The Red Sea crisis, impacting major shipping routes, led to a diversion of cargo traffic towards air transport, benefiting CIAL. The airport facilitated the movement of goods that would have traditionally been shipped via sea, contributing to the overall growth.

CIAL invested in infrastructure upgrades, including expanding its cargo complex and enhancing its cool chain capabilities, to accommodate the increased demand. These investments played a crucial role in handling the surge in cargo volume efficiently.

The airport is focusing on attracting more international cargo carriers and developing new routes to further boost its cargo handling capacity. Discussions are underway with various airlines to introduce dedicated freighter services.

CIAL’s performance demonstrates its resilience and adaptability in navigating global challenges. The airport aims to become a major logistics hub in South India, leveraging its strategic location and infrastructure. Future plans include developing a dedicated logistics park to provide integrated services for cargo handling and processing. The airport anticipates continued growth in cargo traffic in the coming years, driven by increasing trade and investment in the region.
