The Communist Party of India (CPI) is asserting its claim for the Deputy Leader of the Opposition post in the Kerala Legislative Assembly, currently held by Congress’s K. Ranjan. This follows the recent Lok Sabha election results where the CPI significantly outperformed the Congress in several constituencies.
CPI State Secretary Binoy Viswam formally requested Speaker A.N. Shamseer to recognize CPI MLA C.K. Asha as the Deputy Leader of the Opposition. The CPI argues its improved performance—winning two Lok Sabha seats and increasing its vote share—demonstrates a strengthened position deserving of the role. They highlight that the Congress suffered substantial losses, particularly in constituencies where the CPI actively campaigned.
The CPI contends that traditionally, the post is allocated based on the number of seats held by parties in the Assembly. While Congress remains the largest opposition party with 22 MLAs compared to CPI’s 10, the CPI emphasizes the shift in political dynamics reflected in the Lok Sabha polls. They believe the current arrangement doesn’t accurately reflect the present political landscape.
The Congress, however, is resisting the CPI’s claim, asserting the post rightfully belongs to them as the primary opposition force in the Assembly. Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan stated the Congress will not relinquish the position. He dismissed the Lok Sabha results as a national election trend and irrelevant to the Assembly’s internal arrangements.
The situation creates potential friction within the United Democratic Front (UDF), the opposition alliance led by the Congress. While the CPI remains a constituent of the UDF, this dispute highlights underlying tensions and differing ambitions. The Speaker’s decision will be crucial in resolving the matter.
The CPI views this as an opportunity to enhance its visibility and influence within the opposition. The Congress views ceding the Deputy Leader post as a sign of weakening authority. The outcome will likely shape the dynamics of the opposition in the Kerala Assembly for the coming term. The speaker is currently considering the request and is expected to make a decision soon.
