KSLSA and Dhare Foundation to create ‘Green Ring’ around Bengaluru by planting two crore saplings

The Karnataka State Legal Services Authority (KSLSA) and Dhare Foundation are collaborating to establish a “green ring” around Bengaluru by planting two crore saplings. This initiative aims to enhance the city’s green cover, improve air quality, and contribute to environmental sustainability.

The project, named ‘Project Green Ring’, will focus on planting native tree species along a 42-km stretch surrounding Bengaluru, primarily on forest department land and along National Highway 44. The saplings will be planted in phases over the next three years, with the first phase targeting 42 lakh saplings.

Funding for the project will come from contributions collected as fines from traffic violators through the e-challan system. The KSLSA will allocate ₹2 crore from these funds annually for the next three years, totaling ₹6 crore. Dhare Foundation will provide technical expertise in species selection, plantation, and maintenance.

The selected tree species are native to the region and chosen for their fast growth, ability to withstand local climate conditions, and ecological benefits. Emphasis will be placed on species that support biodiversity and provide habitat for local wildlife.

Beyond the environmental benefits, the project also aims to engage the public, particularly students and volunteers, in the plantation drive. This participatory approach seeks to raise awareness about environmental conservation and foster a sense of ownership among citizens.

The KSLSA views the initiative as a unique way to utilize funds collected from traffic violations for a positive environmental cause, effectively converting penalties into a sustainable solution. The project is expected to create a significant green buffer around Bengaluru, mitigating the impacts of urbanization and contributing to a healthier environment for the city’s residents. Regular monitoring and maintenance of the planted saplings will be crucial to the project’s long-term success.
