The Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] have announced their unconditional support to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by T. Velmurugan, for the formation of a stable government in Tamil Nadu following the recent Lok Sabha elections.
This decision stems from the hung assembly situation in the state, where no single party secured a clear majority. The DMK-led alliance fell short, and the AIADMK alliance also failed to reach the halfway mark.
Both CPI and CPI(M) state secretaries emphasized the need to prevent a potential political instability and avoid fresh elections. They believe supporting TVK, despite not being part of any pre-poll alliance, is crucial for establishing a functioning government.
The CPI(M) highlighted the importance of secular forces coming together to counter the BJP’s influence, framing the support to TVK as a step in that direction. The CPI echoed this sentiment, stating that their support is aimed at ensuring a government that upholds secular principles.
TVK, a relatively new party, secured one Lok Sabha seat in the elections. Velmurugan expressed gratitude for the support from the two communist parties and indicated his willingness to explore forming a coalition government.
The support from CPI and CPI(M) brings TVK’s potential strength in the assembly to two, as Velmurugan himself is a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA). This support is considered vital for TVK to potentially negotiate with other parties, including the AIADMK, to form a government.
However, the AIADMK has not yet formally responded to TVK’s overtures. The situation remains fluid, with ongoing discussions among various political parties to explore possible alliances and government formation scenarios. The primary goal of CPI and CPI(M) is to avoid a political vacuum and ensure a stable government is established in Tamil Nadu.
