A two-day dog show commenced in Udhagamandalam, featuring approximately 200 dogs representing 55 different breeds. The event, organized by the Madras Canine Club, is being held at the The King’s School grounds and is sanctioned by the Kennel Club of India.
The show aims to promote responsible dog breeding and showcase the diversity of canine breeds. Breeds participating include popular ones like Labradors, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, and Boxers, alongside less common breeds such as Tibetan Mastiffs and Irish Wolfhounds. Participants are competing in various categories based on breed standards, including conformation, obedience, and agility.
Judges from both India and abroad are evaluating the dogs, assessing their physical attributes, temperament, and adherence to breed-specific characteristics. The conformation aspect focuses on how well a dog conforms to the ideal standard for its breed.
Organizers highlighted the increasing interest in dog shows and responsible pet ownership within the region. The event also serves as a platform for breeders and enthusiasts to connect and share knowledge. A significant number of participants are from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala.
Beyond the competitive aspect, the show includes stalls offering pet accessories, food, and grooming services. Veterinary professionals are also present to provide advice and address concerns related to pet health. The event is expected to attract a large number of dog lovers and families over the two days. The show concludes on Sunday with the announcement of the best in show winners across different categories. The organizers emphasized the importance of ethical breeding practices and the welfare of dogs.
