The University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Mandya, has reported a record production of 5,000 tonnes of seeds in the past year. This achievement marks a significant increase in seed production capacity for the university.
The seeds produced encompass a variety of crops including paddy, maize, jowar, pulses (like Bengal gram and green gram), oilseeds (sunflower, groundnut), and vegetables. These seeds are crucial for ensuring food security and supporting agricultural practices in Karnataka and beyond.
UAS Mandya attributes this success to improved seed production techniques, effective management of seed farms, and the dedication of its scientists and staff. The university operates multiple seed farms across Mandya district, utilizing scientific methods for seed multiplication and quality control.
The produced seeds are supplied to various stakeholders including the Karnataka State Seeds Corporation (KSSC), other universities, agricultural departments, and directly to farmers. This distribution network ensures that high-quality seeds are accessible to those who need them.
The university is focusing on developing climate-resilient seed varieties to address the challenges posed by changing weather patterns. Research efforts are directed towards breeding seeds that are drought-tolerant, disease-resistant, and capable of withstanding extreme temperatures.
UAS Mandya also emphasizes seed quality control, with rigorous testing conducted at various stages of production to ensure adherence to standards. This commitment to quality is vital for maintaining the genetic purity and germination rate of the seeds.
The university’s Vice-Chancellor highlighted the importance of seed production in strengthening the agricultural sector and improving the livelihoods of farmers. The increased seed production capacity positions UAS Mandya as a key contributor to the state’s agricultural growth. Future plans include further expansion of seed production and diversification of crop varieties.
