The silver jubilee celebrations of the Swami Vivekananda Memorial in Belagavi, Karnataka, commenced on February 12, 2024. The memorial, built on the site where Swami Vivekananda stayed during his travels in 1892, is managed by the Ramakrishna Math, Belagavi.
The three-day event began with a procession featuring traditional folk art forms, a vibrant display of cultural heritage, and enthusiastic participation from various organizations. Dignitaries including Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, Karnataka Minister Govind Karjol, and Swami Yogananda Teertha of the Pejawar Math inaugurated the celebrations.
The memorial holds significance as Swami Vivekananda spent several days in Belagavi while en route to the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago in 1893. It was here he met local scholars and engaged in discussions that shaped his perspectives. The current memorial complex includes a shrine, a museum showcasing his life and teachings, a library, and facilities for conducting spiritual retreats and workshops.
The celebrations feature a series of programs including discourses on Swami Vivekananda’s philosophy, devotional music, and cultural performances. A special postal cover was released to commemorate the occasion. The Ramakrishna Math highlighted the memorial’s role in promoting education, healthcare, and rural development in the region.
Speakers emphasized the relevance of Swami Vivekananda’s message of service, universal brotherhood, and national awakening in contemporary society. They underscored his contribution to India’s spiritual and cultural renaissance. The event aims to inspire individuals to embody Vivekananda’s ideals and contribute to nation-building. The Math also announced plans for further development of the memorial to enhance its facilities and outreach. The celebrations conclude on February 14th with a valedictory function.
