Chalakudy river bridge to be closed for repairs from Saturday; 20-day traffic curbs on

The Chalakudy River bridge on the Thrissur-Ernakulam National Highway (NH 66) will be closed for comprehensive repair work starting Saturday, February 17, 2024, for approximately 20 days. This closure will necessitate significant traffic diversions.

The bridge is undergoing repairs due to identified structural issues. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is undertaking the work, aiming to strengthen the bridge and ensure long-term safety. The repairs involve strengthening the pillars and deck of the bridge.

During the closure, all vehicles will be diverted through the Athirappilly-Mazhuvannoor route. Light vehicles will use the Parambuzha bridge, while heavy vehicles will be diverted via Athirappilly. Signboards have been installed to guide traffic along the diversion routes.

Authorities anticipate significant traffic congestion during this period, particularly during peak hours. Commuters are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and allow for extra travel time. Local police and NHAI officials will be deployed to manage traffic flow and assist motorists.

The 20-day closure is a complete shutdown, meaning no vehicles will be permitted to cross the bridge. The NHAI aims to complete the repairs within the stipulated timeframe, but the duration may be subject to change depending on weather conditions and the progress of the work.

Alternative routes are expected to add approximately 20-30 minutes to travel time for light vehicles and considerably more for heavy vehicles. Residents and businesses in the Chalakudy area are bracing for potential disruptions. The NHAI has requested public cooperation during the repair period. Regular updates on the progress of the work and any changes to the traffic plan will be provided.
