Telangana State government has decided to rebuild the 800-year-old Koti Lingeshwara Swamy temple in Warangal, which was demolished earlier this year during road widening work. The decision follows widespread protests and concerns raised by various organizations and devotees regarding the temple’s destruction.
The temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, was located on the Warangal-Kazipet highway. Its demolition sparked controversy as critics alleged insufficient attempts were made to relocate or preserve the structure before proceeding with the road expansion project. The government initially proposed relocating the temple, but faced strong opposition from devotees who insisted on rebuilding it at the original site.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy approved the reconstruction plan, allocating necessary funds and directing officials to commence work immediately. The rebuilt temple will mirror the original structure as closely as possible, utilizing traditional architectural methods and materials. Archaeological experts and temple architects will be involved to ensure historical accuracy and authenticity.
The government has also committed to widening the road without disturbing the rebuilt temple. This will involve modifying the road alignment slightly and constructing a bypass road to accommodate the temple’s location.
The reconstruction project is expected to be completed within a year. The government views this as a gesture of respect towards religious sentiments and a commitment to preserving the state’s cultural heritage. The decision aims to pacify aggrieved communities and demonstrate sensitivity towards religious structures.
Furthermore, the government has assured that similar care will be taken in future infrastructure projects to avoid the demolition of places of worship. A review of existing guidelines and procedures is underway to ensure better coordination between departments and greater consideration for religious and cultural sites. The rebuilding of Koti Lingeshwara Swamy temple is seen as a precedent for handling such situations in the future.
