Suvendu Adhikari has been elected as the BJP Legislature Party leader in West Bengal. He will be the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
The decision was made during a meeting of BJP MLAs held at the party’s Hastings office in Kolkata. Central observers, Mangal Pandey and Avinash Rai Khanna, were present during the election process. Adhikari secured the position unanimously, indicating a unified support from the party’s elected representatives.
This appointment comes after the BJP’s performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal, where the party won 12 seats, a significant increase from its previous tally of 18 in 2019. Despite gains, the BJP failed to unseat the Trinamool Congress (TMC) which retained control of the state.
Adhikari previously served as a minister in the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government before switching allegiance to the BJP in December 2020. He contested and won the Nandigram seat in the 2021 Assembly elections, defeating Mamata Banerjee.
The BJP views Adhikari’s leadership as crucial for strengthening the party’s organizational structure and preparing for future electoral battles in West Bengal. His experience as a former TMC minister and his understanding of state politics are considered valuable assets.
The party aims to consolidate its position as the primary opposition force and challenge the TMC’s dominance in the state. The election of Adhikari is seen as a step towards achieving these goals. He is expected to play a key role in raising issues concerning the people of West Bengal and holding the state government accountable.
The BJP’s central leadership has emphasized the importance of unity and collective effort in West Bengal. Adhikari’s appointment is intended to foster a cohesive approach within the party and maximize its potential for growth.
