Plea to raise upper age limit for govt. jobs by 10 years

The Telangana High Court is currently hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking an increase in the upper age limit for applying for government jobs in Telangana. The petition requests raising the age limit by 10 years, citing disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and previous recruitment delays.

Currently, the general upper age limit is 18-34 years for most state government jobs, with relaxations for reserved categories. Petitioners argue that the pandemic significantly hampered educational opportunities and job preparation for many candidates, effectively reducing their chances of securing employment. Prolonged delays in recruitment processes by the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) and other recruiting agencies further exacerbated the issue, causing many to age out of eligibility.

The PIL contends that extending the age limit would provide a fair opportunity for those who lost valuable time during the pandemic and faced recruitment delays. It highlights that several other states, including Andhra Pradesh, have already implemented similar age relaxations.

The TSPSC initially opposed the plea, stating that any change in age criteria requires a government order and falls outside the Commission’s purview. However, the court directed the TSPSC to file a detailed affidavit explaining the reasons for recruitment delays and the potential impact of raising the age limit.

The Advocate General representing the state government informed the court that the government is considering the issue and a decision will be taken after examining the TSPSC’s report and relevant factors. The court has scheduled further hearing for a later date, awaiting the government’s response. The core argument revolves around ensuring fairness and equal opportunity for job seekers who were negatively impacted by unprecedented circumstances. The outcome of this case could significantly affect the eligibility of numerous aspirants for upcoming government job notifications in Telangana.
