A case has been registered in Kerala against an individual for allegedly illegally uploading and distributing the Malayalam film “Patriot” online. The Cyber Police in Kannur district registered the case based on a complaint filed by the film’s producer, Listin Stephen, of Magic Frames.
The complaint alleges that the individual, identified as a resident of Thalassery, made the film available for download on multiple Telegram channels and websites without authorization, causing significant financial loss to the producers. The alleged piracy occurred shortly after the film’s theatrical release on February 23rd.
Police have identified the accused as a 28-year-old man and are investigating his involvement in the distribution network. They are attempting to determine the extent of the piracy and identify any potential collaborators. The case is being investigated under relevant sections of the Copyright Act, 1957, and the Information Technology Act, 2000.
“Patriot” features Tovino Thomas in the lead role and has received positive reviews. The producers were proactive in addressing the piracy issue, promptly filing the complaint with the Cyber Police. This action highlights the growing concern among Malayalam film producers regarding online piracy and their commitment to protecting their intellectual property rights.
The film industry in Kerala has been increasingly affected by online piracy, leading to substantial revenue losses. Authorities are taking a stricter stance against such activities, with several similar cases being registered in recent months. This case serves as a warning to those involved in the illegal distribution of copyrighted content. The police are continuing their investigation and expect to make further arrests as the case progresses. The producer expressed hope that swift action will deter future instances of piracy.
