Karnataka Speaker U.T. Khader is reviewing the legality and technicalities surrounding the election of D.N. Jeevaraj as an MLA from Sringeri following allegations of discrepancies during the counting process. The Congress party has raised concerns about irregularities in the vote count, specifically alleging that Jeevaraj received fewer votes than initially declared and that votes were not properly accounted for.
Khader stated he needs time to examine all relevant documents, including the returning officer’s report, video recordings of the counting process, and any evidence presented by the Congress party. He emphasized the seriousness of the matter, acknowledging that administering the oath to a newly elected MLA requires absolute certainty regarding the election’s validity.
The Congress party, led by State president D.K. Shivakumar, has formally submitted a memorandum to the Speaker detailing their concerns and requesting a thorough investigation. They claim discrepancies were identified during a review of the voter-verified paper audit trail (VVPAT) slips and the actual vote count. Specifically, they allege a difference of approximately 170 votes.
Jeevaraj, representing the BJP, maintains his victory is legitimate and has dismissed the Congress allegations as attempts to discredit the election outcome. He expressed confidence that the Speaker will uphold the democratic process and validate his win.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has been informed of the situation and has reportedly sought a report from the returning officer. Khader intends to consult with legal experts and potentially the ECI before making a decision on whether to administer the oath to Jeevaraj.
The Speaker’s decision will be crucial, as it could potentially lead to a recount or even the nullification of the Sringeri election result, impacting the current political landscape in Karnataka. Khader has assured a fair and transparent investigation, prioritizing adherence to legal procedures and democratic principles. He anticipates needing several days to complete his review.
