U.S. tourist passes away during stay in Dal Lake houseboat in J&K

A 67-year-old American tourist, identified as Robert John Fouser, passed away while staying in a houseboat on Dal Lake in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on February 22, 2024.

Initial reports suggested a possible heart attack, but police investigations revealed no visible signs of foul play. The body was recovered from the houseboat and subsequently taken to a hospital for a post-mortem examination. Authorities are awaiting the post-mortem report to determine the exact cause of death.

Fouser had arrived in Kashmir on February 19th as part of a group tour. He was staying in a houseboat in the Nehru Park area of Dal Lake. The incident occurred during the night.

Police initiated an investigation under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which deals with unnatural deaths. The U.S. Embassy in New Delhi has been informed about the death and is providing consular assistance. Arrangements are being made to repatriate the body to the United States after completion of legal formalities.

Kashmir tourism officials expressed regret over the incident and stated that all necessary support is being extended to the family and the tour operator. This incident occurs during a period of increasing tourist activity in Kashmir, with the region experiencing a significant influx of visitors, particularly during the winter months due to snowfall. The authorities are focused on ensuring the safety and well-being of tourists. The investigation is ongoing to ascertain all the facts surrounding Fouser’s death.
