A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan was found dead inside a camp in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir on May 16, 2024. The deceased has been identified as Constable Rohit Kumar, belonging to the 173 Battalion.
Initial reports suggest Kumar died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound using his service rifle. The incident occurred within the CRPF camp located in the Zainapora area of Shopian.
Authorities have initiated a formal investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding the death. A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered at the Zainapora police station, and further proceedings are underway.
Kumar was a resident of Uttar Pradesh and had been serving in the CRPF for a period of time. Details regarding his length of service haven’t been widely publicized.
This incident adds to a concerning pattern of suicides and fratricides within the security forces deployed in the region, highlighting the immense stress and challenging conditions faced by personnel operating in Jammu and Kashmir. Security officials acknowledge the psychological pressures associated with counter-insurgency operations and the prolonged separation from families.
The CRPF has emphasized its commitment to the welfare of its personnel and has various mechanisms in place to provide mental health support and counseling services. However, the continued occurrence of such incidents raises questions about the effectiveness of these measures and the need for further improvements in addressing the psychological well-being of security force members. The investigation aims to determine if any factors contributed to Kumar’s death and to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
