Change in plans: Bengaluru’s IT Corridor to be white-topped

Bengaluru’s Outer Ring Road (ORR), a major IT corridor, will undergo white-topping of its roads instead of the initially planned asphalt overlay. This decision, impacting a 22-km stretch from Silk Board to KR Puram, was prompted by concerns over the road’s structural integrity and the need for a long-term solution to withstand heavy vehicle traffic.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) initially planned a simple asphalt overlay costing around ₹750 crore. However, a detailed inspection revealed significant damage to the road’s foundation, including compromised drainage systems and underlying layers. Experts advised white-topping as a more durable and cost-effective solution in the long run, despite the higher upfront cost.

The white-topping project, now estimated at ₹1,600 crore, will involve concrete layering. This is expected to increase the road’s lifespan to 15-20 years, reducing frequent maintenance and associated disruptions. The project will be executed in phases to minimize traffic congestion, with work scheduled during off-peak hours and weekends.

Funding will be sourced through a combination of BBMP funds and loans from financial institutions. The project includes upgrading drainage infrastructure alongside the white-topping to prevent waterlogging and ensure the road’s longevity.

The decision faced initial criticism due to the increased cost and potential for longer disruption during construction. However, BBMP officials maintain that white-topping is the most sustainable option, considering the high volume of IT buses, trucks, and other heavy vehicles that utilize the ORR daily. The project aims to provide a smoother, safer, and more durable road surface for commuters and facilitate the efficient movement of goods and services in the city’s crucial IT hub. Completion is anticipated within two years, contingent on funding availability and efficient project management.
