Kerala elections: Social media campaigns, flexboards won’t decide who will be CM, says Ramesh Chennithala

Ramesh Chennithala, a senior Congress leader in Kerala, dismissed the significance of social media campaigns and flex board displays in determining the next Chief Minister. He asserted the CM will be decided by the United Democratic Front (UDF) legislature party after the election results.

Chennithala criticized the LDF government’s extensive use of public funds for self-promotion through large-scale flex board installations and social media campaigns, labeling it wasteful expenditure particularly during a time of economic hardship caused by the pandemic. He specifically pointed to the alleged misuse of funds allocated for COVID-19 relief for these promotional activities.

He highlighted the UDF’s focus on a people-centric campaign emphasizing local issues and direct engagement with voters, contrasting it with the LDF’s perceived reliance on image-building exercises. Chennithala accused the LDF of attempting to create a false impression of overwhelming support through these methods.

The Congress leader emphasized that the UDF is confident of winning the upcoming assembly elections, citing the strong public dissatisfaction with the LDF government’s performance, particularly regarding issues like unemployment, price rise, and corruption. He predicted a significant shift in voter sentiment towards the UDF.

Chennithala also addressed internal discussions within the UDF regarding the Chief Ministerial candidate, stating that multiple leaders are capable of holding the position. He reiterated that the decision will be made collectively by the elected MLAs after the election, prioritizing consensus and the best interests of the state. He downplayed any existing friction or competition among potential candidates.

He further criticized the LDF for allegedly attempting to polarize voters and divert attention from crucial issues through divisive tactics. The UDF, he stated, is committed to a secular and inclusive approach. He expressed confidence that voters will reject the LDF’s strategies and support the UDF’s vision for a better Kerala.
