A 67-year-old American tourist, identified as Robert John Fouser, passed away while staying in a houseboat on Dal Lake in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on February 22, 2024.
Initial reports suggested a possible heart attack, but police investigations revealed no signs of foul play. The cause of death is currently under investigation, with authorities awaiting a post-mortem examination report. Fouser was travelling solo and had arrived in Kashmir a few days prior to his death. He was staying at the Chicago Houseboat.
Police initiated proceedings under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which deals with unnatural deaths, to determine the exact cause. The body was taken to a hospital for the post-mortem.
Kashmir tourism officials confirmed the incident and stated they were extending full cooperation to the police investigation and assisting the US embassy in New Delhi with repatriation arrangements. The US embassy has been informed about the death of its citizen.
This incident occurred during a period of increasing tourist activity in Kashmir, particularly with the winter season attracting visitors for snow activities. Authorities are keen to ensure the safety and security of tourists. The police are treating the case as a sudden natural death pending the post-mortem results. No visible injuries were found on the body. The investigation is focused on establishing the precise medical reason for Fouser’s demise.
