Anantnag MLA’s wife and son have been named in a First Information Report (FIR) for allegedly locking up the doors of a government hospital in Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir, disrupting healthcare services. The incident occurred on February 29th, 2024, at the Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag associated hospital.
The complaint was filed by Block Medical Officer (BMO) Dr. Saleem Ahmad Rather, alleging that the MLA’s wife, Mehbooba Syed, and son, Abrar Syed, along with supporters, forcibly locked the OPD block and the medical record room. This action prevented patients from accessing healthcare and hindered the functioning of the hospital.
According to the FIR, the accused were protesting against the alleged transfer of GMC Anantnag Principal Dr. Showkat Jeelani. They reportedly demanded his reinstatement and, in the process, locked the hospital sections. The protest caused significant disruption to patient care, including scheduled appointments and emergency services.
Police have registered a case under Sections 341 (wrongful confinement), 336 (endangering life or personal safety of others), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 447 (criminal trespass), and 147 (rioting) of the Indian Penal Code.
Authorities have stated that the action was taken to ensure the smooth functioning of the hospital and to protect the rights of patients. The MLA, while acknowledging his family’s involvement in the protest, has claimed the allegations of locking the hospital are false and politically motivated. He asserts the protest was peaceful and aimed at highlighting legitimate concerns regarding the transfer of the principal. Investigations are currently underway. The incident has sparked debate regarding the appropriate methods of protest and the potential impact on essential services.
