A 12-year-old boy, V. Vishnu, sustained severe injuries, leading to the amputation of two fingers, in a crude bomb explosion in Kannur district, Kerala, on May 11, 2024. The incident occurred near a local toddy shop in Pariyaram around 5:30 PM while Vishnu was playing with a device he found near the shop.
Police investigation reveals the device was a locally made crude bomb, likely intended for use against stray dogs. The shop owner, Libin, and an employee, Najeeb, have been arrested for allegedly manufacturing the bombs to deter stray dogs that were reportedly scaring away customers. They reportedly admitted to making several such devices.
Vishnu was initially rushed to a local hospital and later transferred to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital for specialized treatment. Doctors confirmed the amputation of the ring and little fingers of his left hand. His condition is currently stable, but further treatment is required.
The police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Explosives Act and initiated a detailed investigation into the incident. They are examining the materials used to construct the bomb and exploring the extent of the bomb-making operation. The police are also investigating if the accused had previously used these devices.
This incident highlights the dangerous practice of using crude bombs to address the issue of stray dogs, a common problem in Kerala. Animal rights activists have condemned the use of such methods and called for stricter enforcement of laws against animal cruelty and illegal explosives. The local community has expressed shock and concern over the incident, emphasizing the need for safer and more humane solutions to manage the stray dog population. The incident has sparked a debate regarding the responsibility of shop owners and citizens in ensuring public safety and preventing the use of dangerous materials.
