Govandi residents raise complaints with BMC for non-commencement of pre-monsoon desilting work

Residents of Govandi, Mumbai, have expressed strong dissatisfaction with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) over the delayed commencement of pre-monsoon desilting work in their area. Complaints highlight the potential for severe flooding during the upcoming monsoon season due to accumulated silt and garbage in drains and nullahs.

Residents report that despite repeated pleas to local BMC officials, desilting hasn’t begun in several crucial spots, including areas near Deonar and Bainganwadi. They fear a repeat of past flooding incidents which caused significant damage to homes and disruption to daily life. The lack of action is particularly concerning given Govandi’s low-lying topography, making it highly vulnerable to waterlogging.

Specifically, residents point to blocked drains along the Govandi-Mankhurd Link Road and near the Shivaji Nagar bus depot as major areas of concern. Accumulated waste, including plastic and construction debris, exacerbates the problem, hindering water flow.

Local activists and community leaders are accusing the BMC of negligence and prioritizing other areas over Govandi. They claim that funds allocated for desilting are not being utilized effectively. Residents have submitted written complaints and staged protests to draw attention to the issue.

BMC officials acknowledge the complaints and state that tenders for desilting work have been awarded. They attribute the delay to logistical challenges and the slow mobilization of contractors. The BMC assures residents that work will begin shortly and be completed before the monsoon arrives, aiming to desilt approximately 90% of the city’s major drains. However, residents remain skeptical, demanding immediate action and regular monitoring of the desilting process to ensure its effectiveness. They are requesting transparency regarding the allocated funds and the progress of the work. The situation remains tense as the monsoon season approaches, with residents fearing a recurrence of past flooding disasters.
