The Telangana State Cabinet Sub-Committee on Agriculture has decided the state government will purchase jowar (sorghum) alongside maize from farmers during the current season. This decision addresses concerns raised by farmers, particularly in southern Telangana, who cultivate jowar as a primary crop.
Previously, the government’s procurement policy focused solely on maize. Farmers cultivating jowar faced difficulties in selling their produce at remunerative prices, leading to distress sales. The sub-committee’s decision aims to provide a stable market and fair prices for jowar farmers.
The government will procure jowar at a support price of ₹2,050 per quintal, mirroring the rate offered for maize. Procurement centers will be established in key jowar-growing districts, including Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, and Gadwal.
The sub-committee also discussed issues related to maize procurement. It was decided to continue procuring maize at ₹2,050 per quintal. Concerns regarding delays in procurement and payments were addressed, with assurances of streamlining the process.
To facilitate smooth procurement, the sub-committee directed officials to coordinate with millers and explore options for increasing milling capacity. This is intended to prevent bottlenecks and ensure timely processing of procured maize and jowar.
The decision to include jowar in the procurement scheme is seen as a positive step towards diversifying the state’s agricultural support system and addressing the specific needs of different farming communities. The government anticipates this will encourage jowar cultivation and improve the economic well-being of farmers in the region. The sub-committee will continue to monitor the procurement process and make necessary adjustments to ensure its effectiveness.
