The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a contract worth ₹1,476 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the development and supply of Mobile Electronic Fuzes (MEFs). These fuzes will be used in artillery ammunition, enhancing their precision and lethality.
The contract includes supply of approximately 15,600 MEFs over a period of six years. These fuzes are ‘Make-II’ category, meaning they will be indigenously designed, developed and manufactured by the Indian private sector, with BEL as the lead integrator.
The MEFs are crucial for modernizing artillery systems, enabling them to neutralize targets effectively. They incorporate advanced electronic circuitry for precise detonation control, improving accuracy and reducing collateral damage. The fuzes are designed to work with various artillery gun systems currently deployed by the Indian Army.
This project is a significant step towards achieving self-reliance in critical defence technologies under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. It will promote the growth of the domestic defence industry and create employment opportunities. The involvement of private sector companies in the design and development process will foster innovation and technological advancement.
The MoD highlights that this deal aligns with the government’s objective of reducing dependence on foreign suppliers for essential defence equipment. By procuring MEFs from BEL, the armed forces will have a secure and reliable supply chain for this critical component.
BEL will collaborate with other private companies and research institutions to ensure the successful execution of the project. The company has a proven track record in the development and production of electronic systems for the defence sector. The project is expected to contribute significantly to the operational capabilities of the Indian Army’s artillery units.
