Put petty politics aside, says Rahul Gandhi, as he backs Mamata Banerjee

Rahul Gandhi responded to the Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) defeat in the Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal, urging all opposition parties to set aside “petty politics” and recognize the broader threat to Indian democracy. He stated the election outcome wasn’t about one party’s loss, but about the future of India.

Gandhi criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for its alleged attempts to destabilize state governments and undermine democratic institutions. He specifically pointed to the alleged use of central agencies to target opposition leaders and the manipulation of the electoral process. He believes the BJP’s actions pose a danger to the entire country, not just individual political parties.

He emphasized the need for a united opposition front to effectively counter the BJP’s strategies. He suggested that infighting and focusing on minor disagreements would only benefit the ruling party. Gandhi called for a collaborative approach, where opposition parties prioritize the larger goal of protecting India’s democratic principles.

The Congress leader highlighted the importance of understanding the BJP’s tactics and working together to resist them. He warned that if opposition parties fail to unite, the BJP will continue to erode democratic norms and consolidate its power.

Gandhi’s statement comes after the BJP made significant gains in West Bengal, traditionally a stronghold of the TMC. The results have prompted discussions within the opposition bloc about the need for a more cohesive strategy to challenge the BJP in the upcoming elections. He reiterated that the fight is not merely political, but a defense of the Indian Constitution and democratic values. He stressed the urgency of overcoming differences and forging a strong alliance to safeguard the nation’s future.
