Manipur’s Zomi leaders to take late BJP MLA Valte’s body to Delhi, protest outside party office

Manipur’s Zomi leaders are transporting the body of late BJP MLA Paolienlal Haokip to Delhi to protest what they call a lack of justice regarding his death and the broader issues facing the Zomi community in the state. Haokip died of a heart attack on March 15th, but Zomi leaders suspect foul play linked to the ongoing ethnic conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities.

They allege insufficient investigation into his death and a failure to address the community’s concerns, including the lack of protection and the targeting of Zomi villages. The Zomi leaders believe Haokip was stressed due to the escalating violence and political pressure related to the conflict.

The protest in Delhi will specifically target the BJP national headquarters, aiming to draw attention to the central government’s handling of the Manipur situation and the perceived bias against the Kuki-Zomi tribes. They are demanding a thorough and impartial investigation into Haokip’s death, along with measures to ensure the safety and security of the Zomi people.

The Zomi Council, a key organization representing the community, is leading the effort. They are accusing the state government of failing to provide adequate security and of being complicit in the violence. They also express dissatisfaction with the central government’s response, claiming it has not taken sufficient steps to restore peace and protect the tribal communities.

The leaders plan to stage a sit-in protest outside the BJP office until their demands are met. They are seeking a dialogue with central leaders to discuss the issues and find a resolution. The move is a significant escalation of the Zomi community’s protest and highlights the deep-seated distrust and anger over the handling of the Manipur crisis. The transportation of the body is a symbolic act intended to amplify their message and pressure the authorities to take action.
