Andhra Pradesh Sports Minister RK Roja inaugurated a 15-day summer sports camp for children in Ongole on May 13, 2024. The camp, organized by the District Sports Authority, aims to identify and nurture young sporting talent in Prakasam district.
Over 800 children, aged 8 to 16, are participating in various disciplines including volleyball, basketball, kabaddi, kho-kho, badminton, and athletics. Experienced coaches are providing training at the Sports Complex in Ongole. The camp is free of cost for all participants.
Minister Roja emphasized the importance of sports in physical and mental development, stating that such camps help children channel their energy positively and build character. She highlighted the state government’s commitment to promoting sports and providing opportunities for young athletes.
The Minister also mentioned the government’s initiatives to improve sports infrastructure across Andhra Pradesh, including the construction of new stadiums and sports complexes. She encouraged parents to support their children’s participation in sports and help them achieve their full potential.
District Collector AS Ramakrishna Sidharth, Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh member secretary Ramanaiah, and other officials were present at the inauguration. The camp will conclude on May 28, 2024, with a valedictory function and prize distribution ceremony. Selection trials will be conducted during the camp to identify promising athletes for further training and representation at state-level competitions. The initiative seeks to foster a sporting culture in the district and provide a platform for young talents to shine.
