The Communist Party of India (CPI) has called for state-wide protests in Karnataka on May 11th to highlight the severe water shortage impacting the state. The protests are directed at both the state and central governments, accusing them of failing to address the crisis effectively.
CPI State Secretary Aravind announced the protests will involve demonstrations at district headquarters and tahsil offices. The party alleges mismanagement of water resources and a lack of proactive planning are the primary causes of the current situation. They criticize the government for not anticipating the drought despite predictions and for inadequate measures to conserve water.
Specifically, the CPI points to the release of Cauvery river water despite the state facing drought conditions, claiming this exacerbated the problem. They also accuse the government of prioritizing the needs of industries over the general public and farmers. The party demands immediate relief measures for affected communities, including providing drinking water and fodder for livestock.
The CPI is urging the government to declare Karnataka drought-hit and implement comprehensive drought relief packages. They also call for a judicial inquiry into the alleged mismanagement of water resources. The party plans to mobilize farmers, workers, and the general public to participate in the protests.
Aravind further stated that the protests aim to pressure the government to take concrete steps to address the water crisis and prevent similar situations in the future. The CPI believes a long-term, sustainable water management policy is crucial for Karnataka’s development and the well-being of its citizens. They emphasize the need for equitable water distribution and responsible water usage practices. The party intends to continue its agitation until the government responds positively to their demands.
