Assembly poll 2026: CPI(M) commences post-poll debacle stock-taking exercise as it realises there is no magic bullet

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] in Kerala is undertaking a comprehensive self-assessment following its significant losses in the recent Lok Sabha elections. The party acknowledges a need to recalibrate its strategies, recognizing there’s no quick fix for regaining lost ground.

Key findings from initial analyses point to several factors contributing to the setback. A perceived disconnect with certain segments of the electorate, particularly regarding economic issues and the handling of concerns related to farmers and Gulf returnees, is highlighted. The party’s narrative on issues like the SilverLine project also faced strong public resistance.

The CPI(M) leadership is focusing on strengthening grassroots-level engagement and improving communication with the public. There’s a recognition that relying solely on administrative achievements isn’t sufficient to win elections; a more effective outreach strategy is needed.

Internal discussions are centering on addressing the concerns of youth and women voters, who showed a preference for the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). The party aims to better understand the reasons behind this shift in voting patterns.

The assessment also includes evaluating the performance of individual candidates and identifying areas where campaign strategies fell short. A detailed report is expected to be prepared, outlining specific recommendations for future electoral battles.

The party is also examining the impact of social media and the role of misinformation campaigns during the elections. Strengthening its online presence and countering false narratives are considered crucial.

The CPI(M) acknowledges the UDF’s effective campaign, which capitalized on public discontent and presented a united front. The party intends to learn from the opposition’s strategies and refine its own approach.

The upcoming local body elections and the 2026 Assembly elections are viewed as critical opportunities to regain lost momentum. The self-assessment exercise is intended to provide a roadmap for the party to address its shortcomings and rebuild its support base. The focus is on a more inclusive and responsive approach to governance and electoral politics.
